SWEET SUCCESS
Henry and Esther Whetstone and daughter Virginia Whetstone Maguire
give a whole new meaning to the phrase, “Well aren’t you sweet.”
Call them sweet, sugar, chocolate kings or whatever. The truth is, it’s been one sweet adventure for the
St. Augustine-based business since Henry and Esther opened an ice cream shop in 1966. A year later, when the two
tried their hand at making chocolate using a borrowed Hobart mixer from the family motel on Avenida Menendez, Whetstone Chocolates was born.
“We made fudge in the kitchen,” Esther recalled recently, as the
