WHILE NATURE’S INLET ORIGINALLY CUT THROUGH THE BEACH FURTHER SOUTH INTO “SALT RUN” ST. AUGUSTINE INLET IS NOW A VITAL PART OF OUT COMMUNITY PROVIDING NAVIGABLE PASSAGE TO THE OCEAN
exclusively connected to the world by sea for 318 years, but by improved road, be it rail or interstate highway, only for
132 years. Think of the change in mindset. President Kennedy reminded us that our blood has the same salt content as the sea. Richard Francis Burton said “one cannot look to the sea without wishing for the wings of a swallow.”
The next time you visit the beach, stare at the horizon
and imagine the thoughts of
a hundred forebears. Think of their hope, desire, fortune; of exhaustion, defeat, victory; of loved ones arriving and departing; of new worlds beginning and old ones fading. Think of the human story that brought St. Augustine from the sea; a city forged upon the waves.
